Florida group homeworker is arrested for leaving a person suffering from Down syndrome dying in hot car as she slept in a hot van. Sheriff

On the 9th of May the 9th of May, an Pinellas Crossroads worker, identified as 26-year-old Joshua Russell, nursed a man who had Down syndrome. He then took the man back to the group home when he visited the hospitals. After returning from the hospital Russell chose to stay at his home and let 35-year old John Lappoint in the van.

At at home Russell took a bite of krat. Russell admitted to MPs that he drank the drug for a reason: to “feel less agitated.”

After taking kratom Russell took off in the van once more and continued going. While returning, Russell felt tired and dizzy. He parked the van on the driveway, switched off the car, then lay down to sleep.

Russell then awoke from the hot van, covered in sweat, and he was shocked to discover it was Lappoint did not breathe.

As per Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri, Russell tried artificial respiration but could not revive Lapointe.

Russell who was armed was able to call his mother, who was armed, and told her he was planning to commit suicide when he realized what he’d done. His mother advised Russell to not commit suicide.

His mother called 911 , and his mother called 911 and the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office replied that they were located on 82nd Avenue, which is just from Oakhurst Road in Seminole.

As the police arrived at the scene, medical personnel had already declared Lapoant’s demise as dead. Russell left the scene by foot and was in a state of fear. When the police officers found Russell in his room, the 26-year-old informed that he planned be suicide.

At the end of the day, deputies were able to bring Russell in custody. Sheriff Gualtieri claimed that the temperature inside the van at time of the death of Lappoint was 125 degrees.

“You know that this poor man was baked in that car, and that’s exactly what occurred,” Gualtieri said.

Russell is accused of an aggravated manslaughter charge against an adult with disabilities.
