TAMPA (WCTV) – Wednesday’s admission by a Florida man in a Tampa court that he smuggled more 20 aquatic lizards from the Philippines to Florida was made by the Justice Department in a statement.

Operation Sounds of Silence is a joint initiative of the Justice Department and the Interior Ministry’s Fish and Wildlife Service. It aims to indict and capture anyone involved in illegal trade in protected species.

Akbar Arkam (44), violated the Lacey Law which prohibits illegal wild animal trade. Court documents show that he was in business from January 2016 to December 2016. Prosecutors claim that the lizards were often sold as beautiful designs and were then stuffed in socks and taped with adhesive tape. The lizards were then put in electronic equipment and shipped under false labels.

The lizards will be sent to Akram by an employee from Massachusetts. Officials confirmed that the lizards were sold in Colorado, Connecticut and Massachusetts.

Operation Sounds of Silence continues to be a job.
